AN EXCITING STORY
BY FIONA WILKIE
We have seen many changes in food and beverage over the last few years and I am extremely proud to be beginning a new food story at the University of Birmingham. We have listened to feedback and we have recognised the need for change. This book provides a short summary of the role of Food Fellows and a brief description of our food story.
I understand how important food and beverage is to university life, from students leaving home for the first time to a member of staff buying their lunch or a conference delegate eating food at an event; food facilitates social and cultural experiences.
The role of Food Fellows is to offer great food experiences to all, as well as tell the story behind it – this is why we see ourselves as Purveyors and Storytellers.
We hope you enjoy reading this as much as we have enjoyed writing it.

INTRODUCING
FOOD FELLOWS
Food Fellows are responsible for the delivery of all food and beverage at the university, including retail outlets, delivered catering, hospitality, conferences and events. We are driven by the needs of the university community and through our passion for food. We will deliver an authentic, innovative and sustainable food experience, in line with the wider university ethos.

THE ESSENCE OF OUR STORY
Our food story is the way we do business, the methods we use and the culture upon which we operate.
It’s underpinned by three important pillars that are evident in everything we do:
AUTHENTIC
We will procure, prepare and present food that is original, genuine and honest.
SUSTAINABLE
We will align ourselves with the ethical values of our customers and our community.
INCLUSIVE
We will endeavour to develop menus that are accessible, considerate and affordable.
We recognise that we are at the beginning of our journey, and are constantly developing our work around these pillars. This will be the recipe for our success.
WE LOVE SOURCING, PREPARING, SERVING AND TALKING ABOUT FOOD, IT'S OUR PASSION!
